Growing Up

What does it mean to be a woman? When do you cross the line from childhood to adulthood? I know there is a very wide, fuzzy line around this, and even if I make it all the way across, I'm sure for the rest of my life I will live with the childhood traits and mentalities that I will never outgrow.

What is honesty? What is a lack of discretion? This is another line I struggle to define. Because there are so many things in the world I am unsure of, I always have stuck to my "honesty is the best policy" motto, but I'm starting to realize that is another childish mentality. While honesty is important, one of the most important human virtues is wisdom. Wisdom knows the line between lies and discretion, honesty and no boundaries.

The heart has reasons that reason knows not. Impulsivity is attractive, easy, something I easily fall into, and fully enjoy. Yet sometimes I must sit back, and use wisdom. I always have struggled to use discretion ever since in high school I set out to mess with all the people who judged me. My hotheadedness led me to make stupid decisions, and while I temporarily controlled it, I again let it slip. I traded wisdom in for stupidity, from discretion to a lack of serenity that affected many of my relationships.

For once, I need to trade in my own selfishness that my human nature leads me toward and use a self-control and peace I can only achieve through my own inner-battle to overcome it, with a little help. If I wake up every morning with this mantra, I cannot fail, and soon my discretion, while not able to undo the past, will guide me to a smoother future.
